Sweeney Todd Graduation Project 2017

Sweeney Todd
The demon barber of Fleet Street
by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler

Luca Dalbosco Graduation Project (2017)

The whole project was inspired by the song "No place like London", a piece that we can find in Sondheim's musical right after the opening number (The ballad of Sweeney Todd). In this song Mr Todd and Anthony talk about London as a great black pit that devours everybody. The main feature of this set is a big oven, an oven that symbolizes London and at the same time the gate for hell. In the Ballad of Sweeney Todd, the demon barber comes out of this oven, as a hellish ghost, a ghost summoned by the chours, a ghost that comes back to tell his story. A series of pipes are coming out of this oven, pipes that surround the whole set, because there's no escape from that infernal fate.
The other pieces of the set are scraps of reality, realistic objects in an undefined environment, as if the whole musical was an horror story enlightened by a single candle, because in the best scary stories we can focus on some scenes but we can't see the whole frame properly.
